Romney Wins Michigan

January 16, 2008

The Republican race for the White House continues with Mitt Romney winning the Michigan primary. With 100% of precincts reporting it was Romney 39%, John McCain 30%, Mike Huckabee 16%, Ron Paul 6%, Fred Thompson 4%, and Rudy Giuliani 3%. This is the fourth Republican primary and the count stands at Romney 2, Huckabee 1, and McCain 1. The South Carolina primary takes place on Saturday (the same day as the Democratic caucus in Nevada) (CNN).

As the primaries and caucuses go on, there is still no clear front runner in either party. This is especially true for the GOP, however, where 3 candidates hold primary/caucus victories in 4 states. Rudy Giuliani, who was considered the “inevitable” candidate throughout 2007, has yet to place in the top three in any primary or caucus. After the results came in for Michigan, Steve Forbes, the national co-chair of Giuliani’s campaign, said, “I think the McCain defeat tonight simply underscores how volatile this race is – how fluid it is, and also underscores how wise Rudy Giuliani was to focus on Florida. We’re going to do very well [in Florida]. That means he’ll do well on February 5, and that means we’re going to get the nomination.”
