Dennis Kucinich Drops His Bid
January 24, 2008
Speaking to a reporter from Cleveland’s Plain Dealer, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) stated that on Friday he will announce his intention to withdraw his candidacy for President of the United States: “I will be announcing that I’m transiting out of the presidential campaign. I’m making that announcement tomorrow about a new direction” (AP). The “new direction” refers to the race for his seat in Congress, which will also be voted on this November. He faces four other Democrats in the congressional primary.
Kucinich never managed to build a broad Democratic base in the presidential contest, though he did attract a relatively small group of “ardent supporters and stayed in the race even after it became clear that his campaign was going nowhere” (Reuters).
Kucinich was very outspoken about his views on the war in Iraq, calling for withdrawal and refusing to vote in favor of funding the war. He has also proposed a Department of Peace, supported universal health care, supported gay marriage, and called for Vice President Cheney to be impeached.
He says he will not be endorsing another Democrat for president.
