Mexican Legislators Ask Arizona Legislators to Repeal Employer Sanctions Law
January 17, 2008
Legislators from the Mexican state of Sonora have told legislators from neighboring Arizona that they are “not prepared for a mass return of Mexican nationals.” The Sonoran legislators scheduled a breakfast meeting with Hispanic members of Arizona’s state legislature in Phoenix on Wednesday (NBC 12 Phoenix). Afterwards they held a press conference during which they stated that the Mexican state “can’t handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers in Arizona return to their hometowns without jobs or money” (AP via NBC 4 Tucson).
Arizona’s employer sanctions law took effect on January 1st. The law imposes strict penalties on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.
